An unlikely crew finds each other through fate and desperation: Ray, a scarred and sharp-minded Rat with a knack for strategy; Freddy, a bold and hot-headed Frog who leaps before he looks; Gus, a Goose whose bark is loud but whose loyalty runs deeper; Earl, a Squirrel wound tight with nerves but sharp as any lookout; Carl, a Cat hardened by years on the streets; and Barnstein, a Bulldog who crossed the waters from Europe and brought his own ghosts with him.

What starts as a simple, starving grab for bread grows into something none of them saw coming — a brotherhood built in back alleys, forged on rooftops, and tested in clashes against rival gangs, ruthless pigeons, and walls of fire.
